Before You Leave
Check local reports, recent weather, wind, snow, current, access points, and whether other anglers are using the area safely.
Carry The Basics
Ice picks, spud bar, rope, traction, flotation layers, dry gloves, headlamp, charged phone, first-aid kit, and a way to navigate back in low visibility.
On The Ice
Test as you go, spread out, avoid unknown pressure ridges, watch shoreline ice, and leave before conditions force a rushed exit.
- No fish is worth unsafe ice.
- Local regulations and reports change.
- Children and guests need extra warmth and simpler routes.
- Machines require more ice and more judgement than walking.
